Over 90 telecom companies have expressed their interest to bid for a licence to operate a mobile network in Myanmar. Companies such as Singtel and Telenor are expected to be strong contenders for the licence. In total 2 licences will be issued in order to ensure competition and the best deal for the consumers.
The winning telecos have the option but not the obligation to provide fixed line, international gateway and internet services as well.
The pre-qualification rules were published on 21 February by the Telecommunications Operator Tender Evaluation and Selection Committee.
By April 4, the applications for pre-qualification are due with extensive documentation on the applicant’s telecom experience, financing and regulatory compliance. The committee will then announce by April 11 who is pre-qualified and thus be allowed to put in a bid.
The licence will be awarded by 27 June 2013.
