Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications says it has selected 13 companies to sell its new Ks 1,500 SIM cards in Yangon, including Elite Tech, Asia Mega Link, Tarmoe Nyae Chan Thar and Fortune Company.
The move follows chaos at mobile phone shops in central Yangon that were overwhelmed by customers eager to snap up the SIM cards when they hit the market on September 1. Customers complained that the SIM cards had not been distributed widely and that his prompted long lines at the shops that had been allotted the new SIM cards.
“We have sold out all SIM cards today. We sell three SIMs per a person. People are queuing in the early morning and all cards are sold out by the afternoon. We can sell as many cards as [MPT] wants,” a sales person from a Samsung outlet said.
MPT chief engineer Aung Kyaw Thet said this was normal. “Everyone will queue to buy SIM cards at the start, but it will quiet down later. MPT will sell SIM cards in large quantities. We have enough SIM cards to sell [to everyone],” he said.
MPT said it would eventually sell its new SIM cards in every mobile shop in Yangon. The Ks 1,500 cards do not include Internet access, but for an additional Ks 10,000 Internet access can be added.
