Myanma Post and Telecommunications (MPT) will announce this month the two winning bids for its tender to provide high-speed Internet service, officials from MPT said.
The state-run firm had invited tenders companies to provide 20 gigabyte Internet service. Several foreign telecoms firms, including China Telecom, bid the tender.
“MPT currently has Internet speed of 27 gigabytes. So, we will select two companies providing 10 gigabytes each or a company providing 20 gigabytes,” said one MPT official.
“The tender selection is based on the quality of service and price. Internet speed will be boosted. We will make the announcement this month. Normally, the current Internet speed is okay. However, many people use the Internet on mobile phones and some play online games. This makes the Internet slow,” he explained.
There are many Internet service providers in Myanmar – such as Fortune International, Elite, Yatanarpon Teleport and Redlink – but all have to purchase Internet access from MPT.
