Building code adheres to international standards, deputy minister says

The Ministry of Construction is preparing to enact the draft Myanmar Building Code, Soe Tint, deputy minister for construction told the Upper House on October 1.

The ministry has been working on the code since 2011 and analysing the draft since last year. It has received technical assistance from UN Habitat to ensure the code is environmentally friendly, officials said.

Soe Tint said the draft code incorporated international standards for inspections, construction materials and technology. “The ministry is adhering to the British building code and US concrete technology, worksite standards and steel structural design standards,” he added.

The codes and standards of the American Society of Civil Engineers have been incorporated into the draft, and other international building codes have been used as benchmarks for building codes to ensure buildings can withstand natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods and landslides, and tsunamis, he said, adding that international fire-safety procedures were being used.

International standards for cement will be adhered to and British standards for sand and pebbles followed, Soe Tint added.
