Private Security Gets Government Backup

The Ministry of Home Affairs has started discussions with private security service providers in Myanmar for the development of a Private Security Service Law, according to Col Tin Win, Yangon Minister for Border Affairs and Security.

The ministry is also handling other necessary preparations on the government side for the law, which is expected to improve the security standards in Myanmar through the coordination between the government and private security firms, he said.

“By working together with private security firms engaging in security services in Myanmar, the strength of the security personnel will grow. In other countries, the public sector also works together with private companies in maintaining security. We are trying to submit the bill to the parliament during this year.”

The Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Planning and Economic Development and the Ministry of Commerce are also involved in the preparation of the draft law.

“The cooperation between private security firms and relevant authorities will improve the reliability of the security enforcement. There are around ten licensed private security firms in Myanmar but there are also some firms operating without official permits,” said Daw Su Su Hlaing, managing director of Wining Security Group, who is also an active participant in the talks with the government on the issue.
