Upper House MP Dr Myat Nyarna Soe criticised the government for carrying out development projects throughout the Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory, despite the sparse population there.
The Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory is under the direct administration of the president of Myanmar. Day-to-day functions are carried out on the president’s behalf by the Nay Pyi Taw Council.
“The Nay Pyi Taw Council area is designated as the Union area. Its area should be contracted. It should not be extended. Yangon Region has 45 townships. But there are about 30 townships in the municipal area of Yangon. Now eight townships are being expanded. It is inappropriate. The area is too large, and the population is sparse there. Nay Pyi Taw’s municipal area should be shrunk,” Myat Nyarna Soe said.
“There is a sparse population in the Nay Pyi Taw Council area. Budgets have been requested to decorate lakes with lighting in Nay Pyi Taw. Far fewer people relax at the lakes in Nay Pyi Taw than at the lakes in Yangon and Mandalay, but spending on the area is more than for other regions and states. The budget should be cut,” Myat Nyarna Soe said.
“The extension of the Nay Pyi Taw Council causes trouble for most of the local people. Nay Pyi Taw needs to have precise physical infrastructure projects,” the MP said.
“Infrastructures have been built according to the urban project. We are finishing the urban project off now,” said Kan Khun, a member of the Nay Pyi Taw Council.
