E-visa drives out visas on arrival

The number of foreigners using visas on arrival has been declining after the introduction of e-visa system, according to the Immigration Department.

The e-visa system was launched on September 1, 2014 for 41 countries, most of which are in Asia. On October 2, 24 more countries were included in the programme, including several European countries.

On January 2, 2015, 32 more countries were added, including Jordan, Kenya, Monaco, Morocco, Ecuador, Qatar, and South Africa. Thus, the number of countries whose citizens can use the e-visa system exceeds 100.

“Before the launch of e-visa system, the Yangon International Airport received monthly arrivals of over 10,000 visitors who used visas on arrival. Since the introduction of e-visa system, the number of visitors using visas on arrival has declined. The reason is the e-visa system is more convenient for international visitors,” said an official from the Immigration Department.

The US tops the list in the use of e-visa system, followed by UK, according to the department. Tourists can enter Myanmar using the e-visa system at Nay Pyi Taw and Mandalay international airports as of November last year.
