Master plan to tackle Yangon’s floods

he drafting of a master plan to deal with Yangon’s flooding problems in the rainy season has been completed, according to the roads and bridges department of Yangon City Development Committee.
Since 2014, the YCDC has been drafting a plan for flood preventive measures in six Yangon townships: Kyauktada, Pabedan, Latha, Lanmadaw, Botataung and Pazundaung.

“The master plan includes measures such as the extension of canals, the repairing of drainage systems and construction of sluice gates. Currently, a sluice gate is under construction on the Ywarthit river in Ahlon Township. The water level will fall rapidly even if there is a flood,” said an official from the department.

The YCDC has cleared 20 rivers in six townships and extended canals.

Last year, more than Ks2 billion was budgeted for a better drainage system and this year’s budget for the construction of canals apparently exceeds Ks14 billion.

Disposal blockages, outdated drainage systems and the flow of water to low-lying areas, due to the construction of high concrete roads, are all blamed for increasing flooding.

Tamwe roundabout, Mingalar market, Yuzana Plaza and Thaming junction in Yangon regularly face the worst flooding.
