Baker & McKenzie opens in Myanmar

Baker & McKenzie has become the latest international firm to set foot in Myanmar with the opening of its Yangon office.

The Yangon office, initially staffed by five Myanmar-qualified lawyers, will be led by infrastructure and corporate partner Chris Hughes, who has recently relocated to Yangon from the firm’s Sydney office.

Bakers first tapped into the opening up Myanmar market in 2012, when the firm set up a Myanmar centre in its Bangkok office and appointed Myanmar-qualified lawyer Saw Yu Win as a senior counsel for the centre (15 August 2012).

The Yangon office is the firm’s 16th in Asia Pacific and the second opening in the past year following the May 2013 launch into Seoul (20 November 2012).

“Clients are increasingly looking to Myanmar and South-east Asia for growth opportunities, particularly as the ASEAN nations work collaboratively towards achieving the ASEAN Economic Community by 2015,” said Baker & McKenzie global chair Eduardo Leite.

It is the latest in a raft of firms moving into the jurisdiction. In May 2013, Stephenson Harwood entered Myanmar after striking an association deal with local firm U Tin Yu & Associates (8 May 2013). US firms Duane Morris (10 September 2013) and Herzfeld Rubin Meyer & Rose (29 October 2013) both have an office in Yangon.
