UN works with industries on reducing emissions

The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) led a workshop hosting several local companies as a part of a new project aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, an official said.

In collaboration with the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI), UNIDO conducted the workshop as part of its Industrial Energy Efficiency (IEE) project last week, said Chin Pen Chua, representative and regional director of UNIDO Thailand.

The five-year project will assist selected factories and industrial plants to implement energy-saving measures with the support of trained personnel.

“We expect to start implementation of the project from September this year. We are now finalising the detailed project document,” he said.

UNIDO has implemented similar projects in five ASEAN countries, Mr Chua said, adding that he expected Myanmar’s industries to be “very receptive” to the project, which will also promote improved policy and regulatory frameworks as well as institutional capacity-building.

The government will provide US$3.1 million for the project, while contributions by industries and government institutions will add up to $13.8 million.
