Rural Areas to Get Free Internet through E-village Centres

Myanmar Computer Federation (MCF) is set to open “E-village centres” which will provide free internet access in approximately 6,000 villages around the country.

The project aims to expand the knowledge of rural populations through the introduction of computers and access to the internet, Myanmar Computer Industry Association (MCIA) said.

“The project will open the centres in remote villages first. Free internet access will be provided for a year from the starting date after which a reasonable fee will be charged,” Dr Tun Thura, chairman of Myanmar Computer Industry Association (MCIA), said.

The project is being implemented with funding Japan Telecommunications Engineering and Consulting Services (JTEC), while MCIA provides technical support, according to MCIA.

An E-village centre includes six computers, which are connected to the internet, as well as a Wi-Fi system that will also be launched.

A centre will be put up in each village identified in the project plans.

MCF is working to improve Myanmar’s information and communications technology (ICT) sector through seven initiatives including the E-village project, developing a comprehensive Myanmar font system, providing training to trainers in information technology and promoting application of ICT in other sectors.
