Yone Mu from Sane Lin Yadanar Jewellery Company has been elected as the new chairperson of Myanmar Gems and Jewellery Entrepreneurs Association, replacing tycoon Tay Za who runs the Htoo Group of Companies.
Yone Mu said he would work to move the jewellery industry up the value chain from supplying raw materials to producing finished products.
“I know I will face enormous pressure as a chairperson. I will work to develop the finished-products market for the benefit of members. I will try to bring changes that will see us transform raw products into finished products. Then, we will generated more profits than we do now,” the newly elected chairperson said.
He was elected by secret ballot at the association’s annual meeting on August 25. The meeting was held at Inya Lake Hotel, where 302 of 585 members voted for Yone Mu.
He had been vice chairperson (1) of the association when Tay Za was its chairperson, and he is also managing director of Sane Lin Yadanar Jewellery Company.
Tay Za had been chairperson for six consecutive years. He offered to resign in December 2012, but association members asked him to stay on. The election was held as Tay Za’s term neared its end.
“I know I will face enormous pressure as a chairperson. I will work to develop the finished-products market for the benefit of members. I will try to change the methods to transform raw products into finished products. Then we will have more profits than now,” said the newly elected chairperson.
The association was founded in 2007 and was recognised as an official association in 2009 according to Companies Act.
