Boeing (BOE, Chicago O’Hare) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Air Mandalay (6T, Yangon) pledging to assist the Myanmar-based operator in its efforts to source B737 NextGen aircraft via lease.
“This memorandum is an important step in our growth strategy,” Dato’ Adam Htoon, principal of Air Mandalay, said “Due to the growth of tourism and business investment in Myanmar, air transportation has become an increasingly important contributor to both the nation’s economic growth and its infrastructure development. The country is looking to position itself as a major tourism destination capable of handling an increasing number of foreign visitors. The B737s will provide us with capabilities to support this critical national growth strategy.”
Myanmar’s first private carrier, Air Mandalay operates one ATR42-300 and two ATR72-200s on scheduled flights to fifteen domestic destinations. In addition, it also offers charter services to Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. Earlier this year, the carrier placed a firm order with Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation (Tokyo Haneda) for six MRJ90s with options for an additional four.
