Air traffic at Yangon International Airport has jumped by 153 per cent in 2013 from 2009, according to Department of Civil Aviation.
A number of 20,611 domestic and overseas flights landed at the airport in 2009. The number rose in the past five years, to 25,633 in 2010, 32,944 in 2011, 39,000 in 2012 and 52,226 in 2013.
Notably, in 2013, the number rose by 34 per cent from the previous year.
For foreign travellers, Yangon International airport is the main gateway to Myanmar. Trailing behind in terms of traffic were Mandalay, Heho and Nyaung-U airports.
“The number of passengers at Yangon International Airport and other local airports has been increasing continuously,” said Win Swe Htun, director general of Department for Civil Aviation.
All 27 local airports catered services to nearly 4 million local and foreign passengers last year. The number showed a nearly 30 per cent increase from 3 million in 2011. In 2012, the number of passengers was over 3.5 million.
