Official imports of motorcars through Friendship Bridge in Myawaddy border have increased and mostly include cars used for tour transportation like mini-buses and pick-up trucks.
“A car that will be imported to Myanmar needs Customs clearance document from Thailand and document from Road Transport Administration Department of Thailand. The car bought officially from Thailand might be a little bit expensive but cheaper than buying in Myanmar,” said a businessman.
Most model cars officially imported through the border are Xtra Cab, Open Cab, Smart Cab, Express Bus, Mini Bus, Light Truck, Truck, Pick Up, Farm Truck, and vehicles used in construction sites are imported officially.
To import a car into local market, five percent CT commercial tax, three percent CD Customs duty, two percent tax payment in advance by company, and 0.125 percent from CIF value have to be paid at Myawaddy Trade Zone. For the business people who do not own a company, it costs about US$400 as company licence fee depending on the model of the car.
“Some Thai people usually buy car in Thailand from the car company with credit system and resell the car at the Myanmar border. After paying a particular credit amount to the company, they give back the car key by saying the car has been stolen by Myanmar people so that they don’t need to pay any more. The car bought by Myanmar people automatically becomes a stolen one and is seized if driven inside Thailand. And the Myanmar owner also faces charges,” said a car dealer from Myawaddy border.
