Germany will join the list of destinations for Myanmar’s growing tea industry this month, according to the Myanmar Tea Cluster and Palaung Tea Association.

“Black tea and Oolong tea will be exported from Myanmar this month. We have also received internationally accepted organic accreditation following assessments by delegates from the United States and European Union,” said the association’s general secretary U Tun Myaing.

Japan, Taiwan and Sri Lanka are also potential targets for tea exports, he added.

Among the tea varieties grown in Myanmar, Assam tea is recognised as the best black tea and Chinese style tea the best Oolong tea in the global market, U Tun Myaing added.

“We want to grow quality tea varieties which can sell on the international level. But we need a lot of government support to be able to build technical know-how and grow superior varieties,” U Myint Maung, a tea grower in Hmawbi township in Yangon region told Myanmar Business Today, adding that ensuring exports will benefit not only the farmers but also the country as a whole.
