Rakhine Industrial Zone to Hasten Construction

Now that the national grid can provide full electricity supply, Ponnarkyun Industrial Zone in Rakhine state will be developed as fast as possible, the state government said.

The zone, which will be constructed on a 1,833.5 acre plot of land, will include 160 feet wide six-lane roads, 80 feet-wide four-lane roads and 60 feet-wide two-lane roads as well as 28 plots for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and 12 plots for plastic related industries.

Land inside the zone is will be allotted into six plots for foodstuff productions, 12 plots for garment factories, eight plots for consumer good productions, eight plots for chemical plants, eight for wood processing factories, 16 for printing and related facilities, eight for iron and metal smelters and other spaces for post-harvest fishery facilities, automobile assembly and auto-parts productions, said U Hla Thein, spokesperson of the state government.

“We will complete this industrial zone as fast as we can. Many local and foreign investors are already coming here to observe the situation. As we have secured 24-hour electricity supply recently all the development operations will be implemented sooner than expected.”

The decision to speed up the project has been reached as the union government’s push to accelerate the implementation efforts was complemented by the full time electricity access, he said.

Ponnarkyun township is 50 minutes away from Sittwe, the state capital, at a location easily accessible overland and via waterway.
