Rent for Yangon Zoo to be raised

The Yangon Regional government said it will raise rental fees for the Yangon Zoological Garden, which is run by the Htoo Group of Companies from Ks 70 million (US$ 70,000) to Ks 77 million per year.

“The rental fee will be increased by 10 per cent starting April 1 of this year,” a spokesperson for the regional government said.

The Environmental Conservation and Forest Ministry has been leasing out the property to Htoo Group since April 1, 2011. with the purpose of promoting the zoo and providing full service to public. The lease is a 10-year contract with a stated fee of Ks 70 million per year.

Last April, regional MP Nyo Nyo Thin from Bahan constituency urged the Yangon Region government to reconsider the rental fee, which is lower than the market price. She pointed out that the rental fee for the aquarium in Kandawgyi Natural Park, which occupies a smaller area than the zoo, is Ks 120 million per year. She asked the Yangon Region Parliament to raise the rental fee to meet the current market price.

The parliament responded that the agreement could be amended by April 1, 2015. The rate can only be raised by 10 per cent, according to the agreement.

MP Nyo Nyo Thin said yesterday: “Increasing rental fee by Ks 7 million seems like such a small amount.

I think the newly elected members of the Yangon City Development Committee should get involved in this matter. I will urge YCDC’s new members to do so.”

Htoo Group also runs Hlawga National Park and Nay Pyi Taw Zoological Garden. The entrance fee for the Yangon Zoo is Ks 1,000 per head.
