Ooredoo to Get New CEO for Myanmar Unit

Qatari telecoms firm Ooredoo said that Rene Meza, currently managing director of Vodacom Tanzania, will replace Ross Cormack as CEO of its Myanmar business.
The firm said in a statement that Cormack “has taken the decision to leave his position later this year.”

Over the past two years, Ross has led the Myanmar unit from a greenfield operation to a fully-fledged telecoms provider.

Meza will join Ooredoo Myanmar later in the year and there will be a hand over period to ensure a smooth transition in leadership, the company said.

In the last seventeen years, Meza has held leadership positions in telecoms businesses in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Prior to Vodacom Tanzania, Meza was Managing Director of Airtel Kenya and Zain Kenya and he was also Chief Operating Officer of Millicom Pakistan.

Nasser Marafih, Ooredoo Group CEO, said in a statement, “Rene Meza has considerable experience in leading the growth of telecoms businesses in emerging markets and we believe he has all the qualities to take Ooredoo Myanmar to the next level as we continue to roll-out Myanmar’s first 3G-only mobile network.

Cormack joined Ooredoo in 2003 to lead the mobile business in Qatar and in 2005 he became CEO of Ooredoo Oman.

“Ross has been an inspirational leader for Ooredoo and a key member of the Group Leadership Team and has had a major influence on the development of Ooredoo Qatar and Oman, businesses which are generating strong growth for Ooredoo. In just under two years, he has led the creation of the new Ooredoo operation in Myanmar, one of the world’s fastest changing economies, which will be a significant growth opportunity for the Group. We thank Ross for all his achievements and wish him all the best for the future,” Marafih added.
