MecTel joins the discount fray

The oft-overlooked other mobile operator has introduced a discount plan for its CDMA users.

The “Shwe Myinttar” plan will allow for on-net calls at K21 per minute, off-net calls at K22 per minute, and internet at K6 for 1 megabyte.

The plan is only slightly cheaper than its existing fees of K22 per minute on-net, K23 per minute off-net and K3 for one minute of internet, which has been in place since August 12.

Its rates were previously as high as K50 per minute for calls.

MecTel users can sign up by texting “SMT” to SMS number 233.

The company started operating its own mobile communications in April 2013.

A company official requesting anonymity told The Myanmar Times yesterday that the operator has 3.8 million users at present, though that figure could not be independently verified.

MPT by contrast was the market leader by the end of July with 14 million subscribers.

MecTel offers three monthly packages, Diamond, Gold and Silver, for interested customers.

MecTel is a state-backed operator that has kept a low profile in contrast to MPT, Telenor and Ooredoo, which have conducted extensive marketing campaigns.

MecTel is not listed on the most recent Ministry of Communications and Information Technology list of licences, from August 12, as holding a Nationwide Telecommunications Licence, though MPT, Telenor and Ooredoo all have this licence.

Myanmar recently opened a tender for a fourth operator.
