YCDC postpones land auction indefinitely

The Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) has postponed its land auction to a future unspecified date after facing a widespread opposition, reports say.

The committee put up 74 plots in North Oakkalapa, Thingangyun, South Dagon Myothit, North Dagon Myothit, Dagon Myothit Seikkan, Thaketa, Yankin, Dawbon and Shwepyitha for auction in August.

The plan, however, received outcries from people who are currently applying for land ownership. Their farmlands are among the plots put up for auction, and some have sent their claims to state-run newspapers. Some have filed for the rights to vacant lands on the auction list.

Moreover, nine farmers claimed the collective ownership of 14.75 acres of land beside the power line in the No 23 Industrial Zone in South Dagon Myothit and have sent letter to the president requesting that the land not be auctioned.
