Two new overpasses to go up in Yangon

San San Nwe, the Yangon Region minister for finance yesterday said the Yangon Region government will build two overpasses in Yangon in the 2016-2017 fiscal year.

While submitting the region’s budget bill at the first regular session of the second regional parliament, the regional finance minister said Ks 32.2 billion will be earmarked for the construction of two overpasses in Yangon in the coming fiscal year.

The construction of the two overpasses aims to reduce traffic congestion in Yangon. A flyover at the junction of Kaba Aye Pagoda Road and Parami Junction will have a budget of Ks 15.75 billion, while Ks 16.45 billion has been budgeted for another flyover at North Okkalapa roundabout, she added.

The regional government has been building overpasses one after another with the aim of easing traffic jams in Yangon. However, traffic problems remain unresolved in the city, despite the construction of flyovers at Hledan, Showgonedine, Bayintnaung, Myaynigone and Kokkine junctions under the current government. Currently, two overpasses at Tamwe and 8 Mile junctions are under construction. The first phases of the construction of the Tamwe overpass and the 8 Mile overpass are expected to be completed by the end of March 2016.

Shwetaung Co won the tender for the construction of Hledan overpass; FMI Co for the Bayintnaung flyover and Capital Development Co for Shwegondine, Myaynigone and Kokkine flyovers.

The ineffective overpass projects have been the target of much public criticism, with some claiming they serve only to enrich the government cronies who own the construction companies selected to implement the projects.
