Thai Investors Lured to Open Airline, Hotel Projects in Myanmar, Cambodia

Thai investors are being encouraged to open airline and hotel projects to support tourist industry in Myanmar and Cambodia, said Thai Tourism and Sports Minister Korbkarn Watanawrangkura.

Myanmar and Cambodia have launched promotional campaigns in competition with Thailand to draw more visitors than ever from around the globe.

But large-scale investment projects, especially in airline and hotel businesses, are yet lacking in the two Southeast Asian countries to support their respective tourist industry, said the Thai tourism minister.

For instance, she said, Bangkok Airways might probably open an international airline between Bangkok and Myeik city in Myanmar’s Tanintharyi Region to shuttle passengers daily.

A delegation of the Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sports and representatives of the Thai airline firm is scheduled to visit Myeik later this month to see how interesting such airline business would be, according to Korbkarn.

Meanwhile, more luxury hotels are being needed in Siem Reap city in northwestern Cambodia to accommodate foreign tourists as well as the Thais, she said.

She added that the Cambodian authorities had recommended that Thai investors build some five-star hotels in Siem Reap where tourist industry has considerably flourished.
