Suzuki to establish factory in Thilawa SEZ

SUZUKI has announced that it plans to expand its business in Myanmar by building a manufacturing factory of automobiles and motorcycles in the Thilawa Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

“Suzuki began manufacturing automobiles and motorcycles in Yangon South Dagon Township in 1999. Although a 12-year investment agreement was due, we have been trying to make automobiles and motorcycles here since 2013.” Said Sugiyama, managing director of the Myanmar Suzuki branch.

Suzuki has confirmed it will build the factory on a 20-hectare plot in the Thilawa SEZ. There have been difficulties in finding the raw materials to manufacture automobiles in Myanmar, it is reported, with the company planning to address material shortages following the completion of the factory. The factory is slated to be operational in 2018 according to the Managing Director
