Mon call on state govt to cancel power plant project

Mon State residents presented complaints against a coal-fired power plant project that is slated for construction near Inndin village, Ye Township, to the Mon State government on September 26.

“We reported suggestions about the coal-fired power plant project with the aim to inform government. Mon residents worry about the project. If the government has the same wish as the residents, it will cancel the construction of the coal-fired power plant. Moreover, we would like to urge the government to stop building coal-fired power plants anywhere in the country,” said Thiri Oo from the Andin Youth Forum.

“Our grandfathers and great-grandfathers, Phar Lain residents, conserved natural resources and the environment, and we want to do the same thing for the next generation. We don’t want to damage our natural resources and environment through the construction of a coal-fired power plant,” said Thiri Oo.

“We met with the Mon State chief minister and the rest of the state government as well as the chairman of the Mon State parliament and told them no residents agree with the construction of the coal-fired power plant that is being planned near Andin Village. The chief minister pledged that he would not implement the project during his time in office. He also said that he did not agree with the implementation of the project. We will try to officially stop the coal-fired power plant project. We also urged the authorities to issue a formal statement on the postponement of project,” said Aung Thein from Andin Village.
