YBS’ Nascent Progress for Yangon’s Populace

Old buses currently operating under the YBS Bus Lines System will be replaced by new buses in three months, said Dr. Maung Aung, secretary of Yangon Region’s Transport Supervision Authority.

“New vehicles made in Korea and China will replace the old buses plying currently in Yangon. Air conditioning, GPS systems and other necessary equipment will be installed in these new buses. Dyna, BM buses and old buses will be substituted with over 1,000 new buses,” he said at the Safety on Roads meeting held at the office of Merchants and Industrial Entrepreneurs’ Federation on Monday.

According to Yangon Region’s Transport Supervision Authority, arrangements are being made to upgrade bus stands and to control YBS buses under the GPS system, it is learnt.

To reduce traffic jams in Yangon Region and for the bus lines to become disciplined, Yangon Region’s Cabinet changed to a new system starting 16 January.

U Phyo Min Thein, the Chief Minister of Yangon Region’s Cabinet, also said that Ks60 billion would be spent to buy new vehicles for the YBS bus line in Yangon Region.

It is also learnt that the Yangon Region Cabinet will assess the situation of the YBS system quarterly and the above bus lines will be changed into public-owned bus lines. After transforming into publicly owned companies, all the buses will be equipped with interior CCTVs and card-paying systems. The Yangon Region Transport Supervision Authority released the news that in launching new buses, over 3,700 buses will commence operation, with 55 units to be used for short routes and more than 110 units for long bus routes. Out of over 6 million of urban and sub-urban populace in Yangon Region, nearly 2.5 million people regularly use buses for transportation.
