Yangon Squatters Exceed 450,000

The number of squatters in Yangon has exceeded 450,000, chief minister Phyo Min Thein told business leaders at the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

“The squatter problem is related to the industrial zones. But some industrial zones have no squatters. There are many squatters in Hlaingtharyar Township. I will lead the committee to allocate squatters and cooperate with the union government. We previously estimated that the number of squatters would be around 400,000,” he added.

Yangon sees an increasing population from across the country and industrial development.

“We are working to build basic infrastructure for the systematic management of squatters in accord with the international resettlement programme. We need to offer them health care and education,” he said.

“Efforts to upgrade industrial zones would succeed only when the squatter problems could be solved. Industrial zones face a fire risk,” he warned.
