Yangon road, water and rail payment bids invited

Dr Maung Aung, the secretary of Yangon Region Transport Authority (YRTA), says the authorities are working to introduce the same cash payment system for the Yangon Bus Service, water taxis and circular trains.

On August 9, the YRTA invited a tender for the cash payment system for transport services and will start receiving bids applications from August 25. The 10-member bid-scrutinising committee has three regional ministers, civil servants and representatives of the private companies.

The cash payment system for the YBS is due to be available in February, according to a press conference held at Yangon government offices on August 1.

The region’s Kayin Ethnic Affairs Minister Naw Pan Thinzar Myo, the vice-chair of the committee, said: “Commuters can use both cards and cash if each bus company is not ready to launch in January and February 2018. Commuters can use the YBS with cash if they forget their card one day.”

Nine ministers, including Yangon’s chief minister, will select the company to provide the service with a contract due to be signed in December.
