Five Int’l School Officials Detained in Insein Prison

Five officials of a company operating international schools in the country have been detained in Insein central prison in Yangon while being investigated for teaching the Myanmar language without the approval of the education ministry, a company lawyer said Thursday.

The officials of the Brighter Future International (BFI) Education Services Co. were detained since last Friday, said company lawyer Daw Nandar Myint Thein.

“Currently five members of the board of directors (of the company) are detained at Insein central prison. Only the woman official got bail,” she said.

On July 14, the six company directors were summoned to the Insein township court for questioning about the complaint that two of the schools the company is operating, the Shu Khinn Ther International College in Yangon and the Mandalay International Science Academy, were teaching the Myanmar language without permit from the education ministry.

Under the law, violators could be imprisoned for up to three years and could be fined up to K300,000 (US$220).

Daw Nandar Myint Thein said that the company officials were not allowed to leave after the questioning and were instead remanded in the Insein township police station.

On Monday, the six were transferred to the Insein central prison. The woman school official was allowed to post bail on Tuesday.

“Our schools are open in Myanmar so we are teaching Myanmar language aimed at better understanding of the Myanmar culture and language. This was based on the request of the parents of our students,” she said. “We are not teaching the government curriculum. The Myanmar language curriculum that we are teaching in our schools is designed by us”
