Japan shows little interest in investing agriculture sector

Japanese businesspeople have not shown much interest in investing Myanmar’s agriculture sector, according to a statement made on the sidelines of the 13th Joint Meeting of the Myanmar-Japan CCI Business Cooperation Committee.

“The Myanmar-Japan cooperation committee has held its 13th meeting,” Dr Soe Tun, vice president of Myanmar Rice Federation, told the reporters. “However, Japan has invested little in the agriculture sector.

“When they meet, they usually discuss investment in other sectors rather than agriculture.

“I have not found them discussing a single topic about agriculture.

“But Japanese investment in our agriculture sector could play a major role.”

From the 1988-1989 fiscal year to September this year, Myanmar’s agricultural sector had seen over US$380 million in foreign investment – accounting for only 0.51 per cent of total foreign investment – according to figures from the Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration.

From April to September this fiscal year, US$130.207 million in foreign investment has come to the

agriculture sector. In 1988-1989, foreign investment in the agriculture sector amounted to US$34.351 million. Then, there was no foreign investment for five consecutive years.

US$138.750 million was invested in 2010-2011 and there was no investment in 2011-2012. Then, foreign investment in agriculture sector totalled US$9.650 million in 2012-2013, US$20.269 million in 2013-2014, US$39.666 million in 2014-2015 and US$7.180 million in 2015-2016. There was no investment in 2016-2017.

The Myanmar Investment Commission is said to have invited investment in the agriculture sector, promising to allow business transactions as quickly as possible.
