Myanmar airline arrivals up

CHIANG MAI, 25 January 2018: Myanmar recorded 1.3 million tourist arrivals at its main aviation gateway Yangon International Airport, the country’s Myanmar Tourism Marketing reported at the ASEAN Tourism Forum.

The annual ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF), opened at an elaborate gala dinner at Chiang Mai’s Royal Park, Rajapruek on Wednesday evening, 24 January.

MTM reported that arrivals at Yangon’s airport increased by 7%, when compared with 2016.

It noted that visa exemption between Myanmar and some ASEAN countries had helped to increase arrivals. There was a 75% increase in arrivals from Vietnam and a 62% improvement from the Philippines. Arrivals from Singapore increased 20% and from Thailand 12%

The increases were attributed to the recent launch of new International airline links, as well as visa-free travel.

Myanmar’s travel trade is lobbying for visa-free travel from Malaysia, the only country in ASEAN that has not signed off on a visa-free travel concession with Myanmar.

MTM in its industry update said new hotels will open this year including international brands such as Pullman, Kempinski, MGallery and Excelsior.

Overland travel is high on the agenda especially for trips that include Thailand routed through one of four border posts.

The objective is to extend overland opportunities by opening border gates with India and China.

Opening the border checkpoints with China would allow tour operators to create tours visiting four countries – Myanmar, China, Thailand and Laos.

Today, 25 January Myanmar’s tourism industry will host a media briefing at the show to update information about the tourism sector in the country as well as invite journalists to visit the country on media trips.

Myanmar Tourism Marketing (MTM) is part of the Myanmar Tourism Federation and is mainly privately funded by key members of the tourism industry in Myanmar.
