Shan allows collection of entrance fees at Inle

The Shan State government has allowed local community organisations to collect entrance fees at Inle Lake so they can have funds to conduct conservation work on their own part of the lake.

Speaking on Saturday, U Khin Maung Latt, general secretary of Save Inle Lake, said 16 civil society organisations and another six private associations will start collecting entrance fees to the lake after the Thingyan festival.

“We will form a group with these 22 organisations on how to collect the entrance fees,” he said. “Then we will hand over a contract to the tender winner after Thingyan. We intend to use these entrance fees for Inle Lake’s conservation,” he said.

Sixteen civil society organisations and six tourism related associations, such as the Myanmar Hoteliers Association in southern Shan and the Myanmar Restaurant Association, operate around the lake.

He also said that they need to hand over 45 percent of the entrance fees to the government, another 45pc for lake conservation, and 2pc for tourism promotion by the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism.

Another 6pc would be used for honoraria of the staff collecting the fees and 2pc would be used for planning Inle region development.

“Every foreigner has to pay US$10 or K13500 for entrance fees,” said U Khin Maung Latt.

Shan State invited tenders for the entrance fees last fiscal year, and hotel owner U Myat Min Soe won the tender with K3 billion.

According to the winning company, some 280,000 to 290,000 people visited the lake in the last fiscal year.

This year, tourism associations expected 300,000 people to visit the lake but the violence in northern Rakhine State affected inbound tourism arrivals.

Inle Lake is second largest lake in Myanmar and one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country.

It is a freshwater lake located in the Nyaungshwe Township famous for its floating villages and gardens.
