MCDC clears squatter huts

MANDALAY- Mandalay City Development Committee (MCDC) yesterday demolished over 60 squatter huts situated beside the road near Ayeyar Tun Building, on Strand Road, Mandalay.

The village of squatter huts had stretched along the road, west of Ayeyar Tun Building in Chanmyathasi Township.

“Demolishing process isn’t concerned with Six-lane Project. The dwellers living in the Ayeyar Tun Building complained us about the squatters who lived beside the road and discarded urine and faeces unsystematically. So, we informed them in advance three days and then we launched demolishing process,” said Kyaw Zaw Aung, MCDC’s member.

MCDC staffs started the squatter removal operation so also the police force carried out the security tasks. Moreover, municipal vehicles sent those squatters who want to transfer to the new places.

“Firstly, we lived behind the motor road. But, we were evicted last year due to the six-lane project. So, we had to stay traffic-island. Since the yesterday morning, our huts were demolished. We had lived here over 30 years before constructing the Ayeyar Tun Ward. We requested authorities to replace the accommodation but they replied that there was no place for us. We are going to face trouble,” said Sein Htay, one of the squatters.

With the aim of upgrading Circular Strand Road to Shwe Hlan Bo park, squatter huts beside Circular Strand road, western part of Ayeyar Tun Ward, Chanmyatharsi Township had been removed last year July 30th.

The Amarapura Urban Development Project, the Mandalay Business Capital City Development Co.Ltd (MBCCD) will upgrade the Circular Strand Road to a six-lane road, Zaw Ye Win, a spokesperson of MBCCD told the MCDC at a ceremony at the No.2 Wastewater treatment plant, which is being upgraded.
