Yamato ventures into Myanmar’s small-cargo delivery market

YANGON — In a move aimed at tapping into Myanmar’s small-cargo delivery market for homes and businesses, Japanese logistics company Yamato Holdings on Monday launched joint venture Yamato Global Logistics Myanmar in Yangon, the country’s biggest city.

“In the near future, we want to offer small deliveries within Myanmar, one of our company’s strengths,” said President Masaki Yamauchi at the launch.

Yamato already offers the same type of services in Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. The company hopes to leverage its global network and experience in small-cargo delivery to grab a larger share of the Southeast Asian market.

Among other services, the venture will provide transport and logistics services of construction materials and parts for foreign businesses in Myanmar. It will also offer refrigerated deliveries of perishables like vegetables and marine products.

Yamauchi did not announce a start date for the new services.

In 2016, Yamato acquired Malaysia-based OTL Group, a ground logistics company with a distribution network stretching from Singapore to China via Thailand and Vietnam, to which the venture will have access.

“Myanmar is becoming a vital part of the supply chain with Thailand,” said Yamauchi. The country is developing customs checkpoints and major roads connecting Myanmar and Thailand, while Yamato focuses on value-added services, such as providing continuous GPS tracking of delivery trucks.
