Myanmar to Saudi marine products export to be discussed in Dubai Marine products Exhibition

Vice-Chairman of Myanmar Fisheries Federation (MFF) Dr. Toe Nanda Tin said that Saudi Arabia’s postponement on import of Myanmar products will be discussed at the Marine products exhibition which will be held in October 30th to November 1st 2018 in Dubai.

“The embassy of Saudi Arabia requested Department of Fisheries to answer all the questions posted in their website. They sent this in April. I couldn’t answer the questions and transferred to Department of Fisheries. The Department sent the answers back in mid August. I think it will take time. If there is no reply till we go to Dubai, we will discuss with the responsible official when we get to Dubai. This must be done at a government to government level. If the questions were asked at the exhibition, government and private sectors will answer,” Dr. Toe Nanda Tin.

It’s been five months that Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) announced a temporary suspension on fish and prawn imports from Vietnam, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and India. The temporary suspension took effect on April 1. It is said that according to the announcement made by World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) that marine products from Myanmar carry white tail disease.

In the past, 30 percent of farm-raised fish were imported and 41 percent of carp were imported to Saudi Arabia. In local market, the price of carp is declining as there is no import to Saudi Arabia.

Fishery products from Myanmar are directly distributed to Saudi Arabia or indirectly distributed through the UAE. Fishery exports to Saudi Arabia bring in between $ 25 million to $35 million yearly. More than 21,000 tonnes of Myanmar fish and prawns are shipped yearly to Saudi Arabia.

The temporary suspension of fishing imports can cause massive losses and damages to fishing businesses and the nation’s export revenue.

There are some 480,000 acres of fish and prawn breeding farms across the county.
