Arrival and departure cards cancelled

Visitors will no longer need to fill in the Arrival and Departure cards at the Yangon, Mandalay, and Nay Pyi Taw international airports. The measure will start September 12, according to the statement made by the Ministry of Labor, Immigration and Population.

The cancellation is an effort to promote tourism and draw more foreigners to visit the country, the ministry said in the statement.

The government expects to apply similar measures like the visa exemption for visitors from Japan and South Korea and visa on arrival for visitors from China, Hong Kong, and Macau. The measures will start on October 1 in line with the ‘Look East’ policy.

If the government can provide visa exemptions for more countries, more travelers will come, U Phyo Wai Yarzar, managing director of Diethelm Travel, told The Myanmar Times.

U Phyo Wai suggested that more measures, such as the reduction of taxes on international cruises and allowing Thais to cross the Thachilek, Myawaddy, Htee Khee, and Kawthuang borders into Myanmar, be taken to encourage visitors.

According to statistics by the Ministry of Hotel and Tourism, Myanmar received 1,970,013 international visitors at the end of July, which is 2pc less compared to last year.
