Myanmar aims urban planning for over 330 towns by 2030: Union Minister

Myanmar is aiming to have systematic urban planning for over 330 towns across the country by 2030, said Han Zaw, Union Minister for Construction on February 10.

“The objectives of the ministry are to build 18 feet wide and 41,111 kilometers long concrete and tar roads to meet ASEAN standards, to build all concrete bridges with 24 feet width with two lanes road, to build towns with systematic urban planning and to build one million apartments owned by public and private sectors in the towns in 2030,” said the minister.

Myanmar was planned to upgrade its roads across the country using build, operate and transfer system starting from Lashio-Muse road in 1996 and at the present, 25 companies upgraded roads with 3,264 miles in length, said the minister.

“Now we are upgrading Yangon-Mandalay Union Road, Mandalay-Lashio-Muse Road, Yangon-Bayargyi-Kyaikto-Mawlamyaing Road and Mandalay-Sagaing-Monywa Road,” he said.

Moreover Pyay-Magway Road is upgrading year by year starting from Taikkyi. There are some difficulties as they have to take time to remove trees, lamp posts, telecommunication posts, telecommunication cables, houses and shops, said the minister.

The companies made big investments in the construction of roads and bridges and they have to collect money to cover the cost within the timeframe in line with international standardizations. In doing so, the companies are willing to continue to their works, he said.

“We are trying to amend the contracts which are not in accorded with present trend. We held workshop at Nay Pyi Taw to discuss to amend the contracts with the aid of Asian Development Bank, international legal advisors, MPs and the companies,” he said.
