Nordic Group Expands into Thailand

Yangon 22 May 2019

In an unusual example of outward investment, Myanmar Logistics provider Nordic Group has announced the startup of of Nordic Logistics Ltd in Thailand to support its new road transport service between Thailand and Myanmar.

Nordic Group was co-founded in 2015 by Mon Myat Thu and Thorstein Svendsen, and has rapidly emerged as a major home-grown player in the Myanmar logistics scene.

Now, Nordic has teamed up with Thai freight expert Khun Pirapat Nitichaiyanan to set up Nordic Logistics in Thailand. The new company will pick up goods bound for Myanmar from any location in Thailand. Garments and other exports from Myanmar will be delivered direct to Thai customers, or to Thai port and airport destinations for onward shipping. Dedicated account teams in Bangkok and Yangon will take bookings and report to customers.

“In today’s Myanmar, customers are no longer willing to put up with high and unpredictable costs, and variable journey times” explains Thorstein Svendsen, Nordic CEO “they want an integrated daily service with no surprises, whether they are importing or exporting. We have been working with Khun Pirapat to design and build an integrated operation which delivers exactly that.”

As well as investing in Nordic Thailand, Nordic has set up a new operation at Myawaddy to support the cross-border service. At Myawaddy a dedicated team handles customs formalities, and goods are transloaded between Thai and Myanmar trucks in the Nordic yard. “We can offer our customers a unique degree of support” says Khun Pirapat “no-one else has our capability to manage the whole process in-house, end to end.”

Initial cargoes include garments for export from Myanmar, which Nordic delivers airside at Suvarnabhumi en route to Europe and the US; and inbound Thai raw materials for food products manufactured in Myanmar. Nordic is a leader in a growing trend: according to Nordic co-founder Mon Myat Thu “More and more people are switching key shipments away from slow and inconvenient shipping routes to road”
