Anti-corruption team to hire more recruits

Myanmar’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has announced that it intends to recruit more than 100 new personnel.

The commission is seeking to hire 25 deputy investigators, 30 assistant investigators, and 80 deputy assistant investigators.

The ACC currently has a staff of over 300 people who were transferred from other government departments.

“We aim to recruit new blood for the commission,” said U Kyaw Soe, spokesperson for the commission.

Fresh graduates who are under 30 years of age are encouraged to apply. If an applicant is an existing government employee, the age limit will be increased to 35.

According to U Kyaw Soe, the ACC will arrange training for those selected, and they have to sign an agreement to work for the commission for at least five years.

The commission’s is head office is in Nay Pyi Taw and it has two branch offices, in Yangon and Mandalay.

The ACC has been in the spotlight recently with cases involving high-ranking officials such as the former chief minister of Tanintharyi Region, the attorney general of Yangon Region, and the director general of the Food and Drug Administration.

The commission has received more than 10,000 complaints since its formation in 2014, but it has faced criticism for only having prosecuted 46 cases.

U Aung Kyi, chair of the ACC, defended the commission’s record, saying the ACC was doing the best it could given the limited human resources, skills, and experience it has.

“The commission needs to use between 10 and 15 personnel with one leader depending on the case. And each case can take months to properly investigate. With its current strength, we can’t send out more than five investigation groups at a time, which is why we are looking to strengthen our team,” U Aung Kyi said.
