Three tour guide groups from Mandalay, Bagan and Shan State will cooperate to conduct surprise checks of unlicensed tour guides.
They will team up with the tourism police and the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism every Friday to inspect tourist attractions, said U Win Zaw Oo, chair of the Tour Guide Association of Mandalay.
“We will record which travel agents are offering what kind of services and tours, and we will send these facts to the government. There will be problems if legal tour guides are not used. The tour guides need to tell tourists what should be done and what shouldn’t be done,” he said.
According the 2018 tourism laws, regular and casual inspections of licenses were to be conducted by regional tourism promotion committees. However, tourism associations have to carry out the inspections with the help of relevant organisations, said U Win Zaw Oo.
Visitors to Myanmar can face problems if they are unfamiliar with Myanmar culture and use unlicensed tour guides or no tour guides.
The ministry posts signs and sponsors talk shows with the cooperation of licensed travel agents to help tourists avoid such problems.
