Govt to Build More Youth Training Centres

The government will build more training schools for youths who have run afoul of the law, according to U Soe Aung, deputy minister for the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.

He said one of the schools will be built in the capital, Nay Pyi Taw.

“The number of children is increasing at training schools, so the ministry will procure land to build a new school in Nay Pyi Taw,” he said, adding that once an area has been procured, the ministry will immediately file a construction permit.
“We will build training schools in regions and states where there are none,” he said in reply to a question from Daw Khin Soe Soe Kyi, MP for Pyay township, Bago Region, in the Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House) on Monday.

Under the country’s laws, all people under 18 are considered children.

Daw Khin Soe Soe Kyi said the country’s training schools are very crowded, citing as an example one in Thanlyin Township in Yangon, where more than 200 children attend a school that was built to train only 70.

U Soe Aung said the government has completed construction of the Hnget Aw San training school, and the department has spent K11.8 million on Kyaik Wine training school.

“Ninety-two children will be transferred to Kyaik Wine,” he said. “Also, 55 children from Thanlyin training school will be moved to Hnget Aw San for their protection, and the number of staff members increased.”

The ministry cares for children who need protection and those who are on trial in the children’s court.

Children who are sent to training schools after their trials go to one of 10 schools – five in Yangon Region, two in Mandalay Region, and one each in Ayeyarwady Region, Shan Sate and Mon State.
