Final round of bidding for Yangon parking system

The Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) is preparing for a final tender on November 29 for the implementation of a smart-parking system in Yangon.

U Lin Khaing, secretary of the YCDC’s road and bridge subcommittee said the final tender will take place this month for the parking system in six of Yangon’s townships.

It is hoped the parking system will help to curb the indiscriminate parking that has often been blamed for the traffic woes of the country’s commercial capital.

According to U Lin Khaing, 26 companies had submitted initial bids for the parking system and six have been selected to participate in the final tender.

“We’ve approved the final tender this week and we will choose the best candidate for the project,” U Lin Khaing said during a press briefing on the project last week.

Once the system is up and running, YCDC says is plans to collect parking fees of K200, K300, and K500 per hour depending on the type of vehicle.

The YCDC said should the smart-parking system prove successful, then it will be implemented in other parts of the city.

“If the authorities want to collect parking fees, we are ready to pay it. But, they have to make sure there are enough parking bays. I think the bigger problem is the lack of parking bays in the city,” said business owner U Yan Win when asked his opinion on the parking system.

The Yangon Region government announced last year that an advanced parking system will be set up to tackle the problem of the lack of parking space, which is often blamed for the daily traffic congestion in the city.

The YCDC hopes that the new system will stop people parking indiscriminately especially if the fee collection for parking is enforced .

Of the more than one million registered vehicles in the country, some 600,000 are registered in Yangon.
