Myanmar State Counsellor scolds protesting students in Nay Pyi Taw

State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi scolded students who were protesting against the extension of the school year during an event in Nay Pyi Taw on Tuesday.

Myanmar’s de facto leader was speaking at the Education Sector Development Seminar when students stood up and unfurled banners to protest against the one-month extension.

“This kind of ceremony should not be exploited by a person, group or one’s own views,” she said. “Such acts shouldn’t have happened. One must know everyone has rights as well as responsibilities.”

“I can’t see what you are showing in the far back, so it will be of no use,” she added. “If you want to submit something, there are many appropriate ways to do it.”

The protesting students from Yangon University Union, Sagaing University Student Union and Educational College Union unfurled several banners, one of which read, “Will the nation’s economy be improved by extending the school year to March?”

The students demanded, but were denied, a meeting with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

Ko Aung Pyae Sone Phyo said the protesters wanted to bring to the attention of the State Counsellor their opposition to the extension of the school year and their demand for the release of the findings of an investigation into the Mandalay University canteen project.

“The committee investigating the canteen project has not made a decision about the case in four months,” he said.

Deputy Education Minister U Win Maw Tun said the school year is being lengthened to meet international standards.

He said, “The basic education year in every country is 10 months long. We have repeatedly tried and failed to adopt the same system. We are trying to make it happen.”

The school-year extension has been opposed by students, teachers and education workers.
