Former legal head of Ola joins PE firm Myanmar Strategic Holding as legal head


Mumbai: The former general counsel of marquee Indian startups including ANI Technologies that runs ride-hailing company Ola and logistics startup Rivigo Services, Anurag Sharma is joining venture capital firm Myanmar Strategic Holdings (MSH) as the General Counsel.

“Sharma will be responsible for all corporate, compliance and employment legal issues in the fast-growing Myanmar market,” said a person familiar with the development. “He has joined the firm from the beginning of the week.”

An alumnus of Campus Law Centre, the University of Delhi from 2001 batch, Sharma had started his career as practising lawyer in the Delhi and later had joined law firms Kesardass B. & Associates and FoxMandal Little for around a decade.

The first move as in-house counsel was in 2010 when he joined the India unit of nutrition and health major Royal DSM as general counsel. Subsequently, he moved to Biocon as head legal in June 2013 and later joined a domestic subsidiary of Abbott as director legal in February 2015. Later in August 2016, he joined ANI Technologies and then moved to Rivigo in August 2018 and left the firm in September 2019.

Increasingly, several multinational companies (MNCs) are looking at India as active hiring ground for their global roles, especially for emerging markets. “India is not only culturally but from law and regulatory point of view very complex market. Legal veterans from here are always ready to deliver from day one,” said a person quoted above.

Last month, Mekhla Basu, regional compliance counsel for South East Asia for Chipmaker Intel Corporation is joining San Francisco-headquartered software firm Splunk Inc. as its director and corporate counsel for Asia & Pacific (APAC) region.

Myanmar Strategic Holdings is a Venture Capital and Private Equity fund based out in Singapore and Yangon with focus on consumer-focused assets mainly in education and the hospitality sector.
