Yangon restaurants asked to close dine-in services, operate take-away only

Restaurants in Yankin township have been asked to close immediately and operate take-away services only, according to a letter signed by the Yankin Municipal Committee under the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) and delivered by hand to restaurant owners this morning.

Ko Thaw Zin, who runs restaurant Yankin Heights, said he received the letter advising the closures this afternoon. The letter did not state when the instruction to close would be lifted.

He added that town council members also went around with loudspeakers advising restaurants to close to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Ko Thaw Zin, who also runs a second outlet in Tarmwe township, said he has also received a similar letter from the Tarmwe municipality.

Earlier today, Lucky Seven, the popular Myanmar tea shop chain, announced that it would only operate take-away services until March 29 and shut down all its stores for the whole of April.

YCDC has sent request letters to 45 townships in the city’s municipal areas to operate take-away service only, U Than, a joint secretary of the YCDC confirmed.

“The YCDC cannot issue a must-follow order. That’s why we requested restaurants and small shops to operate take-away service only. And customers also need to cooperate with us to prevent the coronavirus. We would like to request everyone to cooperate with us,” he said.

However, markets will still open and the committee has no plan to shut them down, said U Soe Lwin YCDC deputy mayor.

As of March 28, several Yangon hotels that The Myanmar Times has spoken to have said they have not received any requests from the YCDC to close their restaurants.
