Yangon factory workers given three days to withdraw salary

Factory workers in Yangon will be given three days during the stay-home period to leave their homes to withdraw their salaries.

Cut-Make-Pack (CMP) workers will be able to withdraw their wages for September starting Thursday [October 8], according to the Confederation of Trade Unions Myanmar (CTUM).

“The Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI) held negotiations with the employers and according to the Myanmar Garment Manufacturers Association (MGMA), the regional government will allow workers to travel to withdraw their salaries during the stay-home period, Daw Phyo Sandar Soe, general secretary of CTUM.

“Workers are allowed to leave their homes on payday as a result of an agreement among trade unions, brands, employers and general administration officials,” she added.

MGMA said on October 7 that member factories need to arrange for separate payment hours for workers from different departments over 3-5 days considering the number of workers, factory locations and other possible conditions.

On September 21, the whole of Yangon Region, excluding Cocokyun township, was put under a stay-at-home order by the government in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Under the order ,workers from CMP factories were prohibited from going to work for two weeks, from September 24 to October 7. This was later extended till October 21.

Employees of private businesses and organisations are to work from home, excluding those working in essential businesses such as banking and finance, petrol stations, livestock and meat storage industries, medicine and other medical equipment production, the distribution of drinking water and factories which produce personal items.

Additionally, the UMFCCI on September 25 announced that only registered vehicles from essential industries will be allowed to travel from one township from another in Yangon.
