One million acres of cornfield farming contracted in Shan

The Shan State Government is planning to cooperate with private investors and farmers to cultivate one million acres of maize under a contract farming arrangement in Shan State.

This would expand the existing maize acreage in Myanmar by around 50 percent as there is now about 1.9 million acres of cornfields in the country, with around half located in Shan State.

The contract farming agreement will see one million acres of new cornfields being cultivated over five years, according to the Shan State Government. The investment company will provide the seeds, technology and marketing, while the farmers will be responsible for growing and harvesting.

“This is a big project aiming to increase productivity through modern farming systems and business culture. The Shan government’s role will be to coordinate between investors and farmers,” said U Soe Nyunt Lwin, State Minister of Planning and Finance of Shan State Government.

In Myanmar, maize is grown in Shan State, Kayah State, Kayin State, Ayeyarwady Region, and Nay Pyi Taw. Currently, Myanmar produces about 2.3 million tonnes of maize a year and exports about 1.8 million tonnes.

The main export markets for Myanmar-produced corn are China and Thailand. The Shan government has so far received offers from Chinese and Thai investors to participate in the project, U Soe Nyunt Lwin said.

Myanmar’s plans to expand its corn acreage comes at a time of rising demand for maize as animal feed from Thailand. Corn exports to Thailand exceeded 1.5 million tonnes through the Tachilek and Myawady borders in the first ten months of fiscal 2019-20, according to the data released by the Ministry of Commerce. That’s an increase of 855,000 tonnes compared to the previous fiscal period.
