Marine tourism to be launched in Myeik archipelagos

Myanmar’s first island based tourism will be launched in Donnyaunghami Village in the Myeik archipelagos of Thaninthayi Region in the first week of 2021.

A community based tourism is also being implemented in the village in Donpaleaw Village-tract, Kyunsu Township, Myeik District.

Marine tourism to be launched in Donnyaunghami Village also includes night tours.

After seeking permission from the regional government, Directorate of Hotels and Tourism launched CBT projects in Sanhlan Village of Dawei District, Donnyaunghami Village of Myeik District and Makyongalet Village of Kawthoung District after 2017.

“It is the area where Myanmar will launch marine tourism for the first time, so there are many good prospects. There will be four developed tourism sites in the country when one emerges in the Myeik archipelagos. We are trying to make it happen. All the three districts here have prospects to develop. Dawei has a few islands, Myeik has many and Kawthoung has many more. The difference between Myeik and Kawthoung is that the latter allows hotel services on the islands. So, visitors can spend nights there. When CBT starts in Myeik, there will be night tours there. This is the first island based tourism,” said Nyo Win, director of Taninthayi Region Directorate of Hotels and Tourism.

Dr Thein Shwe Myint, chairman of Myeik Tourism Entrepreneurs Association, said marine tourism will open in the first week of January with the start of tours for local visitors because of the Covid-19 period. The tour is estimated to cost about Ks200,000 per visitor, he added.

The four major tour sites in Myanmar are Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan and Taunggyi. The Myeik archipelagos is set to become the fifth major tour site.
